During laparoscopic, or minimally invasive, gastric bypass surgery, your surgeon creates a small pouch from the top part of your stomach and attaches it your small intestine. This restricts the amount of food you can eat.

Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most popular weight-loss procedures in the United States.

How is it done?

All gastric bypass surgeries at Manatee Weight Loss Center are performed laparoscopically. Compared to open gastric bypass surgery, this minimally invasive technique may allow you to recover quicker with fewer complications.

In this procedure, your surgeon makes a few small incisions in your abdomen and inserts a laparoscope and other surgical instruments though them. The camera allows your surgeon to view inside your body during the procedure.

Using the surgical instruments, the surgeon then detaches the top section of your stomach and seals it shut to create a small pouch. The pouch is then attached to the lower part of the small intestine to bypass the larger part of the stomach.

The small intestine is still attached to the large part of the stomach, which allows the larger part of the stomach to receive blood and remain in place.

What are the advantages of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery?

After this procedure, your stomach will hold less food, which limits the amount of nutrients the body absorbs. As a result, you will feel full faster, eat less, take in fewer calories and can lose weight.

Most patients can expect to reduce their excess body weight by 80 to 85 percent within one to two years after the procedure. Many medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and sleep apnea may also improve or be cured completely.

Because the procedure is minimally invasive, patients may also experience:

  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain or fewer complications after surgery
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Quicker recovery
